Well, I had a swell summer — in bed. A little different from last summer, when I hit a few baseballs down at the field. But if I want to play the gratitude game, I’m thankful to be able to play chess with my two boys now.

Can we normalize cannabis, weed, marijuana, pot? I know it’s federally illegal here in the US, but in Massachusetts, where I live, it’s legal. I never thought it would be the one drug, out of all the prescription drugs I’ve trialed — along with the many supplements — for my chronic condition that would help me the most.

Last week, home from a half day of kindergarten, Charlie was sitting on the glider chair in my room. “It smells like medicine,” he said, and covered his nose.

While I do my best to air out my bedroom, sometimes the smell lingers, and my kids will invariably make a comment.

But they know it helps me, so although it physically stinks in their eyes, they see it as a positive. It’s their father’s medicine.

The other day, I received a “Hugs for Healing” cuddle blanket from a thoughtful and talented former co-worker, Amy. Yes, you read that right — a blanket designed for cuddling with one’s self.
