Poker: A Lesson in Love
Texas Holdem poker and my significant other
It was 2004 and I’d finally joined the rest of the world in this poker-tour modern life.
Having been relatively unfamiliar with No Limit Texas Hold’em up until that point, I’d seriously neglected to pay close attention to the dialogue in the cult movie Rounders, but now, deriving a montage of cheesy lines from that shallow, character-driven film with Hollywood-style poker scenes was pure juvenile pleasure.
Like all the other wannabe poker hustlers, I’d go on to tackle the increasingly popular list of poker-themed Hollywood movies; read some poker books; watch the televised WPT tournaments; play online; talk about the game with friends and strangers alike; and make the occasional trip down to Foxwoods Resort and Casino in Connecticut for a tournament of — a La — you guessed it, No Limit Texas Hold’em.
And just like everybody else, I would play in that Saturday night sucker’s game at a friend’s house.
I was not your lifelong player nor your Tuesday night rookie. But I was the guy who caught on quickly and thought he knew a thing or two better than the next guy.
Having said all that, while it’s true that you can read those books about how poker teaches us eminent business and life lessons, which I agree…
