I think the idea of self-promotion in this culture is beaten over our heads by the so-called experts. I wish it wasn’t so competitive because (A) it makes me feel yucky to see it or partake in it, and (B) I suck at it and don’t do it very much myself. Which is not to say that self-promotion is bad or unnecessary, just that it’s sort of taken to an extreme, I feel. That said, I think your article is spot-on.
