Germany’s Glitter

Germany’s outdoor Christmas markets

There comes a time, each and every year

When Germany brings its Christmas cheer.

At the end of the eleventh month

And on through December

In mostly charming settings

With old buildings made of timber.

Markets serve Glühwein

In lieu of that world-famous brew,

Where folks have not only one hot wine

But more than a few.

There are roasted nuts and sausages,

And even gingerbread Kuchen,

For if you want coffee and cake,

Then you really gotta suchen.

Various stalls sell trinkets

And finely crafted children’s toys,

But beware, I say, the crowds are so big,

You’re sure to hear noise,

Like lots and lots of German chatter:

“Ja, Genau” and “Ach so,”

Music such as choir singing

And even decorative lights that glow.

It’s big business for that food and drink

And all those nutcrackers being sold,

But that’s all right because it’s a tradition

That really is so old.

And all the tourists will jabber on

About how it’s a grand old time.

Enchanting German Christmas markets —

They’re utterly sublime.
